Green Cleaning - Good for Your Wallet and the Environment

Submitted by: JAS  11/29/2008 12:50 PM

Lose all those cleaning solution stashed under your sinks, next to the toilet, in your garage, whatever...

To clean 'almost' everything and eliminate odors, these two recommendations really work (and save $, the environment and space):

1) White wine vinegar & water (50/50 mixture) in a plastic spray bottle really cleans and eliminates odors on ALL surfaces (floors, appliances, sinks/tubs, toilets, countertops,car interiors (hard surfaces), etc.

2)If you need a "gritty" cleaner (to scrub a really dirty surface, buy 'BON AMI'. It's made from natural rock so it's environmentally friendly, doesn't scratch and it's cheap - found at most grocery stores.

I use almost all home made or natural cleaners. I miss the fragrances of the commercial ones-all the aromatherapy that makes cleaning just a touch more pleasant. The vinegar smell, a main stay for natural cleaners, does evaporate but by adding a few drops of your favorite natural essential oil, found in lots of health food stores, you get a bit of that aromatherapy too.I agree, Bon Ami is great and is more abrasive than baking soda, which I tried first, but I like to make cleaning as painless as possible and it requires much less muscle than baking soda when you want need to the tough scrubbing done.

You can buy cattle grade baking soda 50 lbs for $11.99 at granges or feed store for cleaning; going in with others $2.40 for 10 lbs will last a year; to make "abrasive" what I do is simply make a paste for oven cleaning of Kosher (coarse) salt; & baking soda adding a tiny amount of water for good paste; cleans beautifully, no fumes! For bathtub, same only use hydrogen peroxide 3% instead of the water; it is a NON TOXIC bleach but not drinkable! additional plus is it kills bacterias & VIRUSES! once done, simply spray 1st with hydrogen peroxide (breaks down in light so use only amount need for job); 1st, then the vinegar! then RUN! the fumes will disappear almost instantly! for fragrance, I put vanilla, lemon, orange extract on a "cotton ball";

For carpet freshener: I simply sprinkle baking soda & cinnamon (cheap got huge container at $1 store) on the floor YUMMY FRAGRANCE! And folks: go to QVC & sign up to watch the Don Aslett programs: he owns the largest janitorial cleaning service in USA; they do NOT use chemicals hardly ever; microfiber clothes designed specifically to be used with water only: 700,000 paper towels would have been used & your microfiber cloth would still be going! Are you putting your cash in the trash? Can find generic ones usually in auto sections of stores; I picked up a microfiber "sponge" type scrubber for $1 to use on hub caps; I am using for dishes & very pleased with it!
