How to Enrich the Quality of Your Compost

Submitted by: l.d.meyer  04/07/2012 12:49 PM

I read the other day about taking the ashes from a fireplace and adding it your compost pile. I would imagine you could use the ashes from a pellet stove or the ones that burn corn also. It is supposed to enrich the quality of the compost, and cheap too. In American history I remember reading about the Indians burning the prairie and it would breathe new life into the vegetation. So it's quite obvious the ash of the burned vegetation has natural fertilizing components.
On a personal note I would refrain from burning any wood that has been pressure treated for weather and insects, the ashes from that source could possibly destroy your precious compost pile.
