"10 Ways to Save Money on Health Costs" (Health.com)

Submitted by: Phillip O  12/02/2008 10:22 AM

It's now official: we're in a recession (and have been for about a year). And one major side-effect of a slumping economy is that it takes its toll on our health -- in many ways. For instance, financial difficulties bring on stress, which can lead to health problems. Another example: for those who had health benefits with their employers, job losses wipe those out. And even if you're lucky enough to hold on to a job with health benefits, many will see their coverage reduced as employers look to cut back on expenses.

So with all of this in mind, I thought it was appropriate to post an article I just read on Health.com titled "10 Ways to Save Money on Health Costs During the Recession".

Here are the 10 headlines, but check out the article for more details behind each:

1. Make a prevention resolution.

2. Stick to your meds.

3. Go generic if you can.

4. Find cheap, good sources of medication.

5. Eat better, save more.

6. Commit to recovery.

7. Know your rights.

8. Fight claim denials.

9. Get organized.

10. Bargain down costs.

I found this line of the article particularly interesting:

"And if you’re facing a hospital stay, there are things you can do before and after to avoid overcharges, including packing your own drugs, keeping a treatment log, and asking for an itemized statement."

That would never have occurred to me--but I suppose it's just like hotel mini bars-$8 for a can of coke. The same must go for hospitals, bring your own $10/bottle aspirin, instead of using the hospitals $10/pill aspirin......

1. See if you have a nurse case manager with your policy, the role of this nurse is to assist you with maximizing your medical benefits and explore cost savings options with prescriptions. The nurse is also available to encourage positive health care behavior, which in turn, helps maintain health and prevent illness.

2. Know your policy plan. Lots of policies are accessible online, so you have no excuse to not know your benefits. You may have access to wellness programs, health coaching, nutritional counseling or discount resources.

3. See if you can enroll in a tax free health savings account

4. Stop smoking, exercise, eat healthy, and aim for stress management in your life.

5. If you are being proposed major surgery or major treatment- life changing and very expensive. Get a second opinion- you are in charge of your Health Management, make an informed decision about what you are going to have done.

Diet and exercise are your only assurance for longevity these days for health even insurance. Eating well leads to long term health benefits that most tend to ignore.
