Building Supply Deals at Habitat's Restores

Submitted by: TBone  12/02/2008 3:52 PM

I had heard about Habitat for Humanity's Restore Building Surplous Stores, so was pretty psyched when one opened up near my house.

Basically, the store sells surplus and salvaged building supplies at a hugely discounted price, and the money they earn on sales goes back to the Habitat for Humanity project. So, you can feel even better about getting a good deal on goods. And it keeps stuff out of landfills too.

I just went last weekend and got two solid oak doors for $10/each, the last oak door I bought cost me $800! and picked up a box of 12/2 wire for $10 would normally sell for at least $100 at home depot.

They've got stores open all over the country. If you are DIYer like myself, I definitely recommend checking out Restore: http://hfhi.org/env/restores.aspx

Thanks for the tip. I have been going to a similar store in Portland, OR called the Rebuilding Center (www.rebuildingcenter.org). I've picked up sinks, molding, doors, and cabinets all pretty cheap. Nice to know ther is another store like that in Portland so if I can't find what I want at one I can go to the other.

We bought a small 2 bedroom house, and put a new addition, with 3 more bedrooms, living room and bath. Four years into the project, I declared war against the original kitchen. My husband and older son said "There is no way you can even start this project without $5-10,000." I said "Watch me!"

Editor's Note: We liked this comment so much, we felt it deserved it's own space as a tip. To read the rest of Kathy Yutzy's tip on how to Remodel a Kitchen on a budget, click here: http://www.tiphero.com/tips_670_salvage-your-way-to-a-kitchen-remodel-for-less.html

As a P.S. to yesterdays entry, when we started, I got a small spiral notebook-one that fit in my purse, and we took measurements of everything--windows, doors, floors, counter tops, and I always kept it in my purse, so if I saw a great bargain, I had the measurements right there, and didn't lose a bargain, because I wasn't sure if it would work.
I had a separate page for each room, item by item. I found so many things this way. I think the best deals were the Berber Carpet remnants for $78, $82, and $155 for each of the bedrooms.
This year we're helping a friend find supplies to refinish a house. She bought a house that had been stripped to the studs, and had some wiring done, for $5,000! We found her a pedestal sink for the bathroom on the side of the road-like new-someone was remodeling. Her toilet came from Freecycle. It's amazing what people offer there. Again, never be afraid to ask!
