A Homemade Remedy to Treat Eczema

Submitted by: anonymous  12/05/2008 2:16 PM

An acquaintance shared this recipe with me.

This is a great bath salt that is awesome for my daughter who has eczema and you can tweak it to work for regular skin too.

3cups epsom salts
4 tablespoons edible organic extra virgin coconut oil
*mix together until clumps of coconut oil is smaller.
add 1/2 or 1 cup to warm bath and soak 20-30 minutes. ok if it gets on hair, not harmful. I also follow up with putting more coconut oil on her legs and arms wherever the eczema rash is.

now for normal folk
use same recipe but use the skin only coconut oil by"now" will be in a purple jar with silver lid at a healthy foods store. prepare as normal.

if desired add 16-20 drops essential oils to batch.
mix till blended.

I like to either use just one scent per batch or some pleasing mixtures are:

rose absoloute/orange oil and sandlewood(easy on the sandlewood)

lavender and sandlewood

**if you use the edible coconut oil versus the skin only type. the edible kind is more expensive and has a light coconut scent, this way you could bypass the essential oils if desired.

=left my daughters skin silky smooth, safe to get into hair, great for feet, avoid face and eyes thou.

Epsom salts is dirt cheap, you can find them at any dollar store, the coconut oil is a bit pricier $5 for skin only type or $10 for edible type. but you could replace the coconut oil with an olive or almond oil you already have around the house or even a baby oil found at a dollar store, the outcome will be slightly different but the benefit will be similar.

I was told by a cosmetologist to just put regular milk on my skin and let it sit for a while. I do this to my face and my body and also my 6 year old son's face and body. Then after letting it sit for a while (probably at least 2 minutes) wash it off. I follow up with extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer. I only use extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer and I don't buy lotions of any kind. The oil heats up and becomes liquid with body heat. Also, a little goes a long way. A large bottle can last over 6 months to a year and coconut oil does not go bad. I rarely have acne anymore; I used to have cystic acne and I was on a lot of medication for it. I do not take any medication now. I also do not have any acne scars and everyone always tells me my skin is beautiful!

A word of caution: people with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease should consult their doctor before soaking in bath salts. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) dry the skin and make it weaker, something diabetics, in particular, would want to avoid. It can also interfere with insulin uptake in Type I diabetics. I would advise ANYONE with a serious medical condition to check with their doctor first.

I use bag balm which is similar in texture to vaseline but was created to work on cows udders to heal rapidly & you can always find it at grange or food stores for animals; also in some pharmacy stores; in Walmart is smaller can for higher price by dog accessories as can easily be used on dogs who have allergies, or mange etc; *********many times, the chemicals in soaps, laundry soaps, shampoos, conditioners are what is aggravating the problem. Simply changing to alternatives without chemicals can stop the problems. You can make your own glycerin soaps easily; & own shampoos, or buy something I use & like is Abba; but I can get it at Bimart & pay $5.49 & not the $25 at beauty supply stores;

Because I crochet for a living and yarn is very drying, my fingers get so cracked they bleed and cuticles crack and bleed. I tried everything until I found bag balm. Yep-Life Saver. And is great for cracked, chapped lips. Doesn't smell great but better than the alternative.

My pediatrician recommended bag balm for the diaper area when my kids were babies. Worked like a charm. Still use it for myself for hands and feet.
