Stock up for the year- not just for back-to-school - when store specials run in August, or better yet when the stores clearance the items in September.

I have a friend who saves on college supplies by reusing her kids school supplies. her kids know to take really good care of their binders and folders because mommy must use them for college. and since she is an online student anyway no one sees them. sure sometimes they are held together with tape and have random drawings on them. but she saves alot of money.
also she buys supplies at the beggining of the year and during the summer/fall times when items are 1cent,5cent,10cent a piece. she stockpiles
(to the extent of some thinking she is nuts) this way her kids have plenty of materials that are new, and she can use their genetly used ones....everybody wins.
and she utilizes free storage containers to store them in too.
she uses empty boxes from costco for the big items and empty clear plastic pretzel or utz mix containers(also from costco)for little items(and dry food staples like rice/pasta etc)
Her shelves were homemade metal/plastic/wood shelves made from odds and ends she found people cast out on trash day or that was given to her.

We take advantage of the marked down items for birthday gifts for classmates through the school year. Hannah Montana or High School Musical themed notebooks and folders, when on clearance become the beginning of a set. Complete it with some color coordinating pencils (stockpiled on clearance), erasers...etc.
