BYO Wine to Restaurants??

I don't know if I would ever have the nerve to do this, but I heard that you can bring your own bottle of wine to a restaurant. Apparently, many restaurants simply charge a 'corking fee' of $10-15 for opening the bottle and providing glasses. But since most restaurants mark their wine bottle prices up to 100% of the wholesale price, you will see significant savings even with the fee.

Curious if anyone has ever done this?

Unfortunatly,that is illegal,the restaurant has to abide by thier liqour license,which means you cant bring your own,among other rules,and your right,the markup is 100%! Its ridiculous!

I have heard of this and have gone to places where you can bring your own drinks. I think they must have to get some alternative liquor license or maybe it is for outdoor places.

Angel ryan, you can bring your own wines to restaurants. You just have to know which ones. I live in NYC and bringing your own wine saves a bundle. I reference this BYO wine list often:

When we visit my daughter in New Jersey many restaurants are byob with no corking fee. Wish I could find some restaurants in Michigan like that!

Any restaurant that does not have a beer, wine or liquor license in Michigan can allow patrons to BYOB. All you need is permission from the owner. How about a nice Chardoney with that McFish snadwich or Chicken McNugget?

Mississippi lets you byob if wine is not offered in a restaurant....not all liquor licenses are the same

l have often brought my own wine to Restaurants, l always call ahead to find out what the corkage fee, as some Restaurants charge up to $15.Its a great way to save money & sometimes the Restaurant forgets to charge the corkage fee!I used to live in Australia where this practice is very common.

I am a severe lifelong asthmatic who is allergic to sulfites, and it keeps me out of a LOT or restaurants. But occassionally I may find one that doesn't bathe it's food in sulfites. What I am wondering is, if restaurants would say no to my bringing my own "sulfite-free" wine with me since for obvious health reasons, I cannot drink the wines offered on the wine list. Does anyone have any experience with this?

My husband & I bring our own wine to most restaurants. We have encountered the restaurants that won't let you open the bottle if it is on their wine list. We also call adhead to make sure we can BYOB.
