5 Hot Tips for Thrifting

Thrifting can be considered an art. Arianne Segerman over at Simple Mom shares her top tips for a successful thrifting experience.

Keep a list and go often. Whether it's children's clothing or items you collect, there are probably a few things that you are in the market for. Keep that list written down and update it with specific things you may be looking for that week. The second part of this tip is to go frequently, in the end this will help save you time because you will quickly be able to spot new items and glance past the items that are always there.

Like it? Love it? When it is time to approach the checkout stand, really scrutinize over the items in your cart. Do you love these items and have specific plans for them? Or is your house just going to end up looking like a thrift shop itself?

Branch out. If you only frequent shops in your community and you never feel like you are finding anything of value to your life then it might be time to branch out to a neighboring town or to shops that seem to appeal to another group such as the elderly.

I second the advice to go often. I had some good items spotted in one shop, but didn't have the cash for them. The next time I went, the store was having a blow out sale -- everything 70% off! I got a $15 chest for under $5, and I knew exactly where it was located in the store. Find out when the sales are -- some thrift stores have senior day every Tuesday or half price clothing day every Wednesday. It saves you even more!

I am a huge thrift store fashionista and my biggest advice would be to go into the store and look through one type of clothing or house ware at a time because if ou just go to browse it can become over whelming. For example if I go to the store to just look at jackets I have time to really look at each jacket.

I've occasionally found high end department store and catalog company clothing for under $8 and sometimes under $5.....I've bought some that still had the original price tags on them. A brand new Cabela's women's cable knit fisherman's sweater I had coveted at Cabela's but didn't want to pay the $40 price tag literally showed up in my size and desired color and I bought it with the tags still on for $7.00! A Coldwater Creek Shirt with a price tag of $32 for $4.00 - tags still on it! JJill and Kohl's clothing too. I love the thrift stores and you are supporting GREAT causes when you shop there!
