The following is a guest post from our friends over at AllFreeKidsCrafts.

Don't break the bank on pricey toys and sports gear for your kids. They really don't need expensive toys to have fun. Sometimes a cardboard box is all you need to make a magical castle or spaceship! Instead of buying expensive items for them, go ahead and engage your kids in some educational activities and other fun craft projects that you will both enjoy!

Homemade toys will always be treasured by your little ones. Teach your kids how to sew and how to make kids' crafts using recycled materials. Not only will they have fun but they will learn valuable life lessons about sustainability. It's so easy and super convenient to make fun toys and other easy kids' crafts from toilet paper rolls, cardboard and paper.

One of our favorites is to tape together boxes to create a house, or castle. I cut out windows and doors....then I paint it. We have a paint collection day and you can get rid of old paint, or take some home if you can use it. I can often find pinks, purples or blues that are great for this. If you get enough stuff together you can build a little town in your garage. This will drive you and your husband nuts because you won't be able to use your garage for the next month or two, but the children will be very happy. If you have an old large rug you can put it under the boxes for a floor, and they can use the garage as a great place to play even in the middle of a Wisconsin winter. If you tire of boxes in your garage and you take them outside on a warm day, and forget them, so they are destroyed by rain, be warned, the mourning will be ear splitting. You may be forced to recreate your little town. Of course, this can be fun as well.
