Unplug as Many Things as You Can

Submitted by: anonymous  12/12/2008 7:47 PM

Unplug as many things as you can easily do every day- toaster, coffee maker, lamps, tvs, computer, hair dryer, cell phone/Ipod charger, etc. Do this as often as possible and you will see a drastic reduction in your electricity consumpution - and a lower bill!

I am utterly outraged that people are billed for electricity "fast response"; this is criminal! THAT is what they "bill" you for folks; the ABILITY to flip a switch & have it on!

Is this true that appliances without those little green lights that glow still pull electricity when not being used if they are plugges in???

@whoever. yes. it's true. referred to as vampire energy, those lights and even just cords being plugged in sucks small amounts of energy from your outlets.

i did this for the last two months and my bill went from 169/mo to 89/mo! yippee!!!!

time-saving tip: plug all into a power strip and unplug the power strip (yes, it is still pulling electricity)

I will try this and see if it really saves me money, but I cannot turn off my dvr, too many good shows to record during the day.

Would flipping the circuit breaker do the same thing? For example, when I go to bed at night, if I trip the circuit breakers to rooms in my house I am not using, will this cut my power bill?

A list of secret energy hogs includes..your TV..remember how they used to have to "warm up" but now they don't..it's costing you.

Microwave..pulls nearly 30-40% of the energy it uses when on even when just sitting there. What wattage is your microwave?

Cell phone chargers..yep even when the phone isn't on the charger.

Thevail-so any suggestions on how to save. was thinking of installing a switch to my microwave so that it is not always on. Don't need a clock on my microwave and on my stove and on my cable box.

I want to test out JKR's tip--switching off the ciruit breakers. particularly if you go out of town. only problem is the one I would want to switch off (stove, microwave, dishwasher) is also connected to my fridge.

Wonderful idea. Our electricity was 100 less last month. Hope for more savings this month. Just Unplug It!

Great Question I would love to know if that indeed would work. I wonder if we could ask the electric company, If I has analog electric meter, these were easier to read then these new digital one. you could watched the little arrow to see exactly what changed when you unplugged it.

I live in the Tennessee Valley and my electric company is a distributor of Tennessee Valley Authority. If you go to www.tva.gov and look for the energy right website they have an online energy audit as well. If you complete the audit you will receive a report and a kit with CFL's and other stuff will be mailed to you for completing the survey.

My electric company will offer suggestions such as changing your light bulbs out to CFL's. LED's are more energy efficient than CFL's. They are more expensive though. The electric company suggest to change one light bulb at a time if you can't afford to buy several new bulbs at once.

I've heard of vampire energy but haven't practiced unplugging any items in my home. I'm trying to make my family more aware of things we can do to conserve energy and improve our carbon footprint on the environment.
