I don’t know if this is always the case, but I purchased NAV’09 online at Symantec and the next day they emailed me $10 off offer on my next purchase, so if you are planning on purchasing multiple items from the site, purchase 1 and then wait a day to purchase the second.

I just purchesed Norton 360 at Royal Discount technology.com and paid 49.99 and free shipping. That was the cheapest that I have found so far. Hope that helps.

Don't buy Norton...it's crap and a waste of money. Go to spybot.com and download the free software. Run it once a week and you're set. I got a virus once that completely locked up my computer and Norton couldn't do a thing. Then I ran my Spybot and bam! No more virus. Enjoy!

You can get AVG anti virus software FREE It is the best. I have used it for at least 5 years and have never had a problem. They automatically update it. Go to Google and type in AVG anti virus software to go to the site. There us a version they sell, but keep reading to get to the free version. Grisoft the company sells virus software to business and gives the free home version as advertising. What better way to advertise a good product.

I have been using Avast...FREE for home use. It scans everything into and everything out from your computer. If you have dial-up, it slows down your computer for a couple minutes each time you turn it on, because it updates each time with new data. But it is well worth the wait. It is easy to use, and very dependable, I have been using it for about 2 years now.

VG is also a good free one. I used it before Avast, but had trouble doing the updating. But I would never put anything from Norton back on my computer. They are not reliable, are not cooperative, and are very expensive, as you already know.

I used their Ghost program to make a complete image of my computer in case of hard drive failure, They checked my discs and said the back up was successful, and when that dreaded day came that my hard drive failed, and I needed the backup to load my new hard drive, I got about 30 seconds into the first disk and "error" popped up and it would go no further. So if you are counting on Norton Ghost somewhere down the line, get ready to do a manual reinstall of everything. And lose a lot of things.

I, too, use Avast. It was installed on this computer I'm using right now in my home that my computer techie son bought for me (I know, he's a jewel, and NO, he's not for sale! LOL) He is VERY security conscious, and in fact, has done work for a major food manufacturer/distributor in the USA. Hence, you can be assured he knows his stuff. He uses Avast on both his desk top and lap top. The free software at Spybot.com is good, too, but he decided Avast was better.

There is a lot of free, very good software out there. I guess you just have to know a $$$ conscious, trustworthy computer tech to know which ones.

I forgot to include this in my earlier post: Avast does free, automatic updates, too.

My son also installed a free browser program, MozyFirefox that includes a free backup program that stores everything on your hard drive and can be set up to do that automaticall, if youdesire. By using that program (which he had a small part in testing and creating),you didn't have to be bothered with purchasing and using more hardware and/or CD's.

If you have a college (technical or otherwise) in your area, call them to connect up with a computer technician, security wizard, programmer, etc. and see if you can "pick their brain" for help. Many students will give advice for free and most are up on the latest, fastest, and best. I'd recommend you do this near the end of the school term.
