Elegant, Yet Thrifty Centerpieces

Submitted by: anonymous  12/26/2008 1:09 PM

Real food and flowers never fail. For a Christmas reception I attended, the hostess had several glass vases and containers that were different sizes and shapes in the center of the various tables. Some were even large jelly jars. These glass containers were filled about halfway with real cranberries and water. She had placed large white roses (the costly part, I suppose, but you could use whatever flower you'd like...) randomly in the various vases. It was simple, yet elegant. The red and white colors were appropriate and festive. Since then, with that idea in mind, I've used lemons and water, as well as grapes and strawberries, for a couple of parties we've had at my house. It seems to catch the attention of my guests and they always comment on them.

I love fresh fruit centerpieces.lemons and limes are great for New Year's parties as they double as garnishes if you run out.

I did a gorgeous glass centerpiece with water lemons and zebra grass wrapped around the lemons. Everyone loved it.

@kerley55

zebra grass is a wide leafed spikey stripped grass. comes in many varieties and is great way to add color to a centerpiece. we have some growing in the back yard, so easy to go out and cut a few strands. there are all sorts of wild grasses that make great additions to centerpieces.

not sure if you can tell from this picture. but I got the idea from a friend of mine who is a florist in virgina:

We did a Scottish themed luncheon after my sister's memorial when she died recently from cancer this last Christmas season.

Ibought 24 glass jars with flutted necks at Hobby Lobby for $1 ea. --- Used white roses, pine from the trees in our field and some filler lysium and red plaid bows...set them on red plaid cloth napkins in the middle of white linen covered round tables...were beautiful!

Sent the arrangements home with the high school girlfriends and others who had helped my sister in her last year. They were thrilled to have a tangible memory of her.

All gardeners love flowers & plants: & it is so easy to brighten ones home with the freshness of flowers! I recently bought a dozen marked down roses for $4 at grocery store: & just the absolute beauty of them was worth it! For Christmas presents I had gotten a bunch of free hanging baskets along side the road no one else had picked up for a while: (i gave them the chance!) I planted with winter pansy's & a note that I was giving them bareroot strawberries when available in Feb! (I always try to get everbearing!) very inexpensive, edible & delightful to behold!
