Fireplace Plate

Submitted by: deef217  12/26/2008 4:32 PM

We recently purchased a fireplace metal plate which covers the opening, once we are 'done' with the fire. We used to have to leave the chimney flue open all night once we went to bed, to insure that all the smoke from the embers was going to go up the chimney and not into our home. Now, with the metal plate, we can cover up the fireplace opening any time we want. The flue remains open behind the plate. Yet, none of our heated air from within the house is going 'up the flue'. A simple thing that is saving tons of heating costs. We used to be reluctant to have a fire because of the flue issue -- but we now can have a fire without the worry of an open flue all night. We bought ours via the internet from Plow & Hearth -- but it would not be all the difficult to innovate and create your own - just use fireproof material and insure that plate is slightly larger than your fireplace opening. Our plate is held in place by a free-standing fireplace screen.

Good tip. I heard that a glass door works well too.

I recently purchase a glass door insert for my fireplace. I to believe that it will help prevent so much warm air going up the chimney. Make sure you measure properly because these are made to your specs and most stores like Lowe's will not take the insert back. You can also buy additional fiberglass insulation to make the seal completely air tight.
