Managing Costly Vices

Submitted by: anonymous  12/26/2008 6:19 PM

For starters, I made my doctor a happy man when I finally quit smoking. I don't really crave them. I joined a website called Shop4freebies and get , well, free stuff - food (both the real size and samples), shampoo, cologne, soap, zip lock bags, all kinds of things that have saved bucks. Also on this site I got a sample of Commit quit smoking capuccino lozenges and I got enough to help me really stop quitting.

Second, I climbed down off of my high horse (as Grandma used to say) and started buying some wines in boxes rather than bottles. A regular bottle is 750 ml and can cost a lot, but the traditional boxed wines (Franzia, Almanden, etc.) are a full five liters for, usually, under $15. That is fine to serve when your guests don't know wine and they actually taste ok to everybody (so far, keep my fingers crossed).

Those are the two vices that cost megabucks for me. The extra money, I use to pay off credit card debt.

Boxed wines are making a comeback! a lot of top vineyards are 'bottling' their wines in boxes now--cheaper to transport as a lot light and easier to recycle and ultimately money savings for the consumer. And boxed wine keeps a lot longer, so you can open a box and enjoy a glass of wine from taht box for up to four weeks. whereas a bottle of wine lasts 2 days if you are lucky before going bad. my favs anything by three bandit thieves and washington hills chards.

glad to see that box wines are hip now!!
