Lower Your Deductible/Collision

Submitted by: frank  12/29/2008 12:13 PM

As your car gets older it is worth less, so make sure that the collision replacement amount is comparable for the value of your car. I adjust the deductible so that I am not covering more than the car is worth.

If your car is more than 10 years old, unless it's an antique, collision isn't worth the extra cost. I had an accident one time and Allstate gave me half of what Blue Book priced the car, not enough to buy a replacement. I lost on that one.

Actually, if you have been with the insurance company for a while, never accept what they offer immediately because everything is negotiable. It is in their best interest to offer you the least amount at first. If they are still unfair, you can tell them that they have been unjust and you can take them to small claims court.

I did it once and they ended up settling out of court and offered me $9,000. My car was only worth $5,000. It takes alot longer to do it this way and takes alot of patience, but it's worth it in the end.
