Keeping Pets Free of Fleas

Submitted by: Tanya Paul  12/30/2008 11:15 AM

I have 2 cats and I take very good care of them. They are "stay in" cats but fleas always seem to get in anyway (probably on pant legs). I worked very hard to get rid of them and now as a preventative, I put moth balls in my vacuum cleaner bag (doesn't smell great but I can handle that as it doesn't last long) and the moth balls work on any flea eggs I sweep up, thus no fleas. The more you vacuum the better off you are!

Another tip is to put about a 3 inch strip of a dog flea collar (the cheapest is fine) in your vacuum bag. It is supposed to kill dust mites as well as fleas. It has no smell and has worked great at our house. I store the remainder of the flea collar in a ziplock bag and cut off more when I change bags.

We encountered a flea problem a couple of years ago with our indoor cat as well. We used everything to get rid of the fleas, but it was a never ending battle. I finally came upon a tip of sprinkling salt down on the floors and leaving it for a few days then vacuumed it up. I did this 2 times and they were all gone. Apparently the salt dries out the live fleas and the flea eggs.

Fleas!! Uhgg! I have a nice home and a sweet little Morky that got fleas this last summer. We used all the oils from the vet and sprays and still he would be covered. I cried!! It was so sad! Borax Soap also called 20 Mule Team soap. Sprinkle it on your carpet in your couch cushions, and expecially under things. Leave it for a couple days and go back and vaccuum. Wait 3 days and do it again. You need to follow the flea life cycle and get them ALL!

A 10lb box of Diametrius earth (white powder) will take care of bugs of any kind outside and in. You can sprinkle a dusting of it on your dog or cat during flea season and it will worm them while killing any bugs, spiders, fleas, worms, scorpions, ants, ticks that land on the animal.
Can be used on ant piles, around the perimeter of the house, or yard to kill bugs including pill bugs on your plants , or garden .

I work at a public school has anyone ever used Diametrius earth for head lice? It would be a real blessing not to use Lice treatments on children

I found a site for non-pesticide head lice treatment for kids, and a customer also said it killed fleas on her small dog.Cost is $19.95 for a 16 oz. bottle.
The site is : supermomshealthand wellness.com She also has a link with testimonies from families who have lost children, after using over the counter, as well as prescription head lice treatment.

You must be VERY careful with the diamatacious earth. It is effective, but it is an extremely fine powder, and if inhaled, can damage the lungs, and sometimes cause death. We lost a cat, after my husband dusted the cat, using a shaker container. He wasn't aware of the dust danger. As with any product, do your homework, and follow instructions carefully!

Stay safe!

lice can also be treated by covering the hair with olive oil and putting a shower cap on and leaving for 8 hours, best to sleep in it. and repeating every 6 days for a total of 3 treatments. i have had great success with this method of treatment, and it is good for the hair and scalp also.

I have used the olive oil treatment for killing lice. You just pour the olive oil through the kids hair and let it sit for a few minutes. It suffocates the lice and they die. You can easily comb out the eggs and the dead lice with one of those metal lice combs they sale by the lice treatments.
