10 Foods You Should Eat for Better Health

Submitted by: Phillip O  12/30/2008 3:18 PM

I came across an article posted on ABC News/Men's Health that lists 10 foods that, while they may be overlooked by most of us at the grocery store, are high in nutritional value and are good for our health. I figured I'd post this as a money-saving tip, as buying these foods at the grocery store and using them to make meals at home is a cheap way to dine, and more importantly, can keep your healthcare costs low by keeping you away from the doctor and away from prescriptions.

The article lists all 10 foods (I've listed them below). The author of the article, Jonny Bowden, PhD, who is a "board certified nutritionist with graduate degrees in nutrition and psychology" also provides a brief description of the food (for those of us who've never heard of or seen it before -- there are a few on this list that qualify for me!), as well as information about why the particular food is healthy and how to cook with/eat it.

1. Beets
2. Cabbage
3. Guava
4. Swiss chard
5. Cinnamon
6. Purslane
7. Pomegranate juice
8. Goji berries
9. Dried plums
10. Pumpkin seeds

I feel healthier just reading about all of the benefits of these foods. Now if I can only find them. No longer farmer market season, and not sure my local market stocks exotics like purslane and goji beries. have never even seen those before.

I love beets!! Psyched to see they made the list. And the beet green salad looks awesome. I bake mine for 35 minutes and get a mix of the red and gold beets and eat them warm with a little goat cheese. Delicious!

I got swiss chard from my CSA last year as well as kale. Got so hooked on them that I am going to grow them this year. Not sure what purslane is. Maybe it could go on a salad. I will check my seed catalogs. I think goji berries are tropical.

Love swiss chard too! The best in soups. White bean soup is my favorite. Purslane is a leafy green plant, very much like a swiss chard.

Just read this article on RealAge.com about cinnamon also being a very economical ingredient that has excellent health benifits. It is high in antioxidants and cell protecting phenolics. I had no idea. This makes me feel even better about my habit of sprinkling cinnamon of everything: oatmeal, coffee, cookis, pork, you name it. Also calorie free.
