How to Get Car Repairs on the Cheap

Submitted by: anonymous  12/30/2008 4:15 PM

While this is a tip I haven't tried yet -- but will -- I thought it's worth passing it along to the TipHero community. Apparently, you can save a lot of money by taking your car that needs repairs to a school that trains students on becoming auto mechanics. These students work on cars for free, and they have instructors overseeing them to make sure the work they do is of good quality.

MSN has an article about this, and they provide one example where someone said they saved $3400 by taking the car to a school instead of an auto repair shop. And, aside from the huge potential savings from doing this, you also might even get better service than a lot of the auto repair shops out there that are more focused on profits than figuring out to repair something correctly.

Here's a link to the article:

We had a "bug" Volkswagon convertible repaired at the votech class at our local community college years ago. The trunk (actually in the back, over the motor, had been dented and we were to have it replaced and painted to match the car. Unfortunately, no one noticed that the back hood to a convertible had air vents in a different place and, in our first trip after the repair, our motor overheated and , I think we junked the car. We had this done when our sons were in high school and you do only pay for the parts. The young men and their instructors did a very good job and financially it was certainly a blessing to our entire family at the time!

Depends on which school you go to. I had a rebuilt carb installed at the local junior college and they completely botched the job. I bartered with a neighborhood mechanic to straighten it out in exchange for doing his taxes.

We have a vocational school near us and we have had vehicles fixed there before. The last fix cost us the part only and it was a twelve dollar part. They have one class for mechanics and one class for auto body work. You can make a donation to the class for their excellent service which is what we did.
