Uses for Empty Toothpaste Tubes?

Submitted by: Tip Hero  01/15/2013 2:41 PM

Here's a tricky one. When you've used the last of the toothpaste in the tube, what are some other ways that you could make use of that empty tube?

We look forward to hearing your best ideas on this one. Thanks for being a Tip Hero!

Cut long end of toothpaste tube off with scissors. Wash tube, inside and outside, thoroughly. Open wide end of tube and fill with icing(for cake decorating), push all icing toward cap end. Once tube is full fold flat end over a few times and open cap. Squeeze tube and decorate your cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. This would be a perfect size for young children's hands who enjoy helping in the kitchen.

Slit the tube on the bottom and wash out all the toothpaste.

Slide over the end of a vacuum cleaner tube and secure with several rubber bands. Stick a flexible hose over the cap end of the toothpaste tube. I use a new water tube that came with a toilet kit. Use a twisting motion to put the tube on the screw end of the toothpaste tube and it holds very well.

You now have a flexible extention at the end of your vacuum cleaner to get into tight hard to reach areas.

After vacuuming vents, refrigerator coils and other hard to clean areas with the accessories that came with my vacuum cleaner, I follow with my toothpaste tube set up. It catches the rest of the dust.

If you have Tom's of Maine and send the empty tube back to them, they will send you a free tube. You won't find this listed on their website. I went on a tour of the factory and they told us this. This was many years ago and I still haven't sent in any tubes since Tom's is not my toothpaste of choice. But I recently got some with a drug store promo so I will likely do this. I figured if I am going to do it, I'll send more than one tube in so that my postage costs reflect getting the best deal. You could call them and inquire if this is still an active promo.

But I like the idea of the vaccuum extension! I'm guessing if you have one of those flat extension pieces that would do the trick. After re-reading it, it seems like this idea is a much longer tube to really get into hard to reach areas. But like a water hose, after a certain length, the suction may become ineffective.

The hose extention I have is 12 inches. The suction is concentrated at the end. The hose is barely larger than the toothpaste opening. there is no loss of suction and it is meant for tight hard to reach areas, not for normal household cleaning.

My vacuum cleaner is a wet vac. I use the vacuum until it dies a slow painful death. Since the tubes and accesories come with the new vacuum, my toothpase flexible extention is permanently affixed to an old vacuum cleaner hose.

I should have mentioned that I seal any leaks with rubber cement.
