Want To Save Money On Auto Insurance?

Submitted by: wilsonca  01/03/2009 2:51 PM

You've heard about the doctor that died and early death because he spent all his time healing others and failed to take care of his own health? I had a rude awakening that brought this parody to light.

For many years I had an insurance agency. I sold auto and homeowners policies to thousands of people. I knew which companies had the best rates. It was my job to know. When I sold the agency, my own policies stayed with a small regional company with really great rates until the company became financially unstable. I bought policies with AllState because my brother-in-law was an Allstate agent. And there I remained.

Last week I was working on my web site and looking over my saving partners. I decided to get a quote for auto and homeowners insurance for myself. Lo and behold, I was blown away when I received a quote from one company that reduced my auto insurance premium by nearly $500 per year.

It was a humiliating experience. I tell everyone else that the best way to save on insurance is to shop and compare, and yet I wasn't heeding my own advice. The truth of the matter is that I am lazy. It was easier to stay with Allstate than to do what was necessary to change companies.

I called up my Allstate agent (no longer my brother-in-law) and told him about the quote I had received. Turns out that the company had come out with new policies, and after they recalculated everything, my premiums were only a few dollars more than the quote that I had received from another company. It wasn't enough to make a switch, but what bothered me is that if I hadn't called Allstate, no one there would have bothered to call me to say they had a better deal for me.

The bottom line is that it pays to shop and compare if you want to save on insurance. You may find that you are grossly overpaying and decide to switch companies, or you could, like me, end up keeping your present company honest. Either way, it takes a bit of initiative, but it definitely is worth the trouble. For myself, I've learned a valuable lesson: Practice what I preach!!

Even if you want to stay with your current company, get quotes from other companies, and present them to your agent. They usually find a way to match the offer or at least come very close.

Thanks for being so honest. This happens time and time again. The dentist who doesn't floss, the doctor who doesn't take care of himself, etc. It's true that shopping around for insurance does really lead to savings. It can't be said enough.

Comparison shopping for auto insurance seems pretty basic, but it never occurred to me to call to ask for a lower rate on my current plan. So I got an online quote from Progressive and took it back to my current carrier, they agreed to lower my rate saving me over $200/year! Thanks Candee, if it wasn't for your post I wouldn't have taken the initiative to call.

Almost the same thing happened to me. I was shopping around and when I called my insurance agent to cancel, he said he was an independent agent and he could find a better deal for me. He never told me that before! So unless you ask, you don't get the good deals. I think I saved several hundred dollars a year also.

similar story but different financial area. just retired and have be examining ways to cut costs. called ATT about phone. they said "oh we have a new pricing plan for your phone package." it saved $11 a month for calling. i doubt they would have called me and asked to reduce our bill.

I have to laugh when I read the comments above. NO...I am not laughing at you...I am laughing with you...if you are laughing.

When I first got my insurance...I paid well over $100 every month (I don't want to remember the exact number I paid). I also found a lower rate, brought it to the attention of my insurance company. My rate dropped a bunch! Then I got married. My rate dropped. Then we moved...my rate dropped. I am now paying $404.80 every six months. I think it was almost double that.

Word o caution: The reason why rates can be so low is they raise your deductible and lower your coverage amounts. If this isn't what you want, be vocal!

Any advice for lowering car insurance if you have a teenager on the policy? I pay 160.00 just for my teen and about $70.00 for me and that is for 1 month!
