Whitening Clothes, Cutting Detergent Use

Submitted by: anonymous  01/04/2009 5:14 PM

I was admiring a friend's laundry a few years ago. I asked her how she kept her family's sox and underclothes so white and her laundry smelled fresh, but not "flowery". She replied its simple. Instead of laundry additives, I use Ammonia. For each "part" of laundry detergent, I use half that much ammonia. Well I experimented and I found I could use half as much detergent as well as half that much ammonia; especially for lightly soiled loads! My laundry is white, fresh and clean. What's more your colors are safe with this method (special fabrics like silk, I have no idea...I don't own clothes that require special handling). Ammonia at Walmart was 79c. Special laundry additives...$3.00-$10. I think it's a no brainer.

This is a good tip, but be aware that detergents with bleach, or using bleach with ammonia is very dangerous.

Regards, Peg

Thanks for the tip on using amonia to keep whites-white. Can you use fabric softener with it?

Thanks

maybe it works on keeping whites/white, but does it have any effect on whites that have already turned dingy? In other words, can it whiten?

I just discovered Mrs. Stewart's bluing and it also does a great job of whitening - without the smell of ammonia or the worry of mixing with a bleach product. The website is:
www.mrsstewart.com and it has all sorts of information on doing laundry plus the stores you can purchase the product. You only use a few drops, the bottle was under $4.00 and will last a long time!

Will using Ammonia be harmful to a septic system?

I have a front load washer and use 1/2 as much fragrance free/dye free detergent as instructed, then add a 1/2 cup of washing soda (avail at most groceries) for large loads and 1/4 cup for small loads. I never use bleach. If I have a real problem with stains or odors, I soak the clothing in a white vinegar and washing soda solution before laundering. You can also use 1/2 cup white vinegar as a fabric softener. The clothes come out clean and smelling fresh with no "fragrance" and my socks and unmentionable are virtually stain free and white.
