Fine Wines on the Cheap

Submitted by: jill  01/05/2009 1:39 PM

Money is tight and as a result I have been dining in more and skipping the bars in lieu of small gatherings with friends. To make it feel like less of a sacrifice and more of a joy, I have taken to treating myself to some fine, but inexpensive wines. Am a huge fan of this list published on Apartment Therapy's Kitchen website. I keep the list in my wallet as a quick reference when I am out. Always nice to know you are getting a deal on a good quality wine.

Here is their list of Great Value Wines, you can read the descriptions at
TheKitchen.com

  • Prosecco Brut, Scu Do NV, DOC Prosecco, $8.99

  • 2006 Ajello Majus, Grillo Catarratto, IGT Sicilia, $12

  • 2007 Charmy, IGT, Vigneti Delle Dolomiti, $13

  • 2006 Berger Gruner Veltliner, Kremstel (1L bottle) $12.49

  • 2005 Antoniou Santorini, Santorini, Greece, $11.99

I have found that Trader Joe's has the best prices on wines. Particularly their Spanish Cava sparkling wines. Typically a few dollars less than other stores prices and a great alternative to champagne.

Good tip Jill. You're absolutely right. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a great wine.

You can also check out these sites for lists of great cheap wines:

I find great deals at Grocery Outlet. I recently bought a case of Benziger Savingnon Blanc at $2.99 a bottle. Regularly 10.99. Very drinkable.

They have a lot of odd wine. You have to buy a bottle -- usually less than $5-7 and try it. If I like it, I go back quickly and buy more.

Traders Joe's 3 Buck Chuck can be very good, and can sometimes be awful. My husband and I really like a nice glass of wine, and many of our friends do as well. Things that I have learned about wine:

- It is unnecessary to pay more than $15 to get a good bottle of wine.
- It's more important to get good wine than cheap wine. If you don't want to drink it, or don't enjoy it, why did you spend the money for it?
- Try as many different types as you can. What you like the best might not be a "popular" varietal, and therefore might be a lot cheaper.

Many wine shops will do free wine tasting. Go as often as possible. Where we used to live, there was a store that did free wine tasting every Thursday and Friday night. We would usually go down once a week, and it was always the owner who was doing the pouring. He would pay attention to the opinions of the people who were tasting, and would get an idea of the likes and dislikes of the "regulars". It was not uncommon to come in, and have him say "You're going to like this one", or "You're not going to like this one" and he was almost always right. Sometimes we would buy wine, other times we wouldn't. But if we came in and said that we were cooking something, and these are the primary flavors, he could hand us a bottle of wine, usually around $10, and it would always be perfect. One bottle of perfect $10 wine will trump 3 bottles of mediocre 3 buck chuch for me any day.
