Swapping Cell Phones to Save Money

Submitted by: anonymous  01/05/2009 4:29 PM

Bob Tedeschi of the New York Times has an interesting article on getting yourself free from your wireless contract. He highlights two websites, Celltradeusa.com and Cellswapper.com, that make it easy for consumers to get out of their wireless contracts by getting someone to take over the remainder of their contract.

"It's a little-known fact that cellphone carriers will let you swap contracts with another person, no matter whether you have one month or two years remaining on your commitment. They just will not help you do the hard work of finding someone who actually wants your contract and the vintage flip phone that came with it."

So why would someone want to take over a wireless contract? Because consumers who take over someone else's wireless contract can avoid paying activation fees and pick-up, often for free, recent cell phone models like blackberry's and KRZRs. For those contracts offering older cell phone models the person soliciting the swap often sweetens the deal by offering a cash incentive, say an extra $50 for taking over the contract.

I was unaware you could take over someone's wireless contract until I read this article and I will definitely look at this option the next time I'm in the market. The article also highlights one recent policy change by carriers that makes it even easier to take over someone else's contract:

"The major carriers have changed their transfer policies so that if you take on another person’s contract, you need not take on its exact terms. The duration of the contract remains, but if, say, you end up with a $100 monthly family plan with four lines, you can change that to a $40-a-month individual plan."

The article is packed with more details on swapping cell phone contracts. Check it out at:

I use my cell phone for only a few minutes a month. I had an old plan for 10 years with a flat fee per month and 38 cents a minute. I kept my same phone an number and got a pay as you go for 25 cents a minute and no monthly flat fee. The minutes roll over on the anniversary date with the purchase of minutes and I can always buy minutes any time. The difference was $18 x 12 months to $100 a year and I will never use all those minutes.

When the battery goes, get one on eBay. Identfy the battery by taking it out and looking on the underside of the battery. I've not replaced my battery in 5 years and when I did, it was $7.

A new site called Cell Escape is set up a lot better than the rest, and its completely free. I have successfully used CellSwapper, CellTradeUSA and even Craigslist to get free phones for my family, but they are all a lot of work. The sites are buggy and don’t offer enough detail. Also, the advertisers never respond. http://CellEscape.com seems to have overcome all these issues and is FREE.
