Advice on Buying Refurbished Electronics

Submitted by: justinsvr  01/07/2009 3:46 PM

I have had good and bad luck with refurbished electronics. My Dell Inspiron Laptop was $650 refurbished and purchased through the Dell Outlet. After 6 months have had no problems, but whenever I get a glitch I do wonder if it is a glitch I would with a new computer or just a refurbished one. But overall have been very happy. And the laptop came with a factory warranty.

On the other hand, I purchased a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse refurbished through Overstock and had all sorts of problems. I could not get either of them to connect with my computer, so I called a Logitech specialist and they asked for the ID codes on the bottom of each item to help with the troubleshooting. Both had been scratched out, so it took even longer to troubleshoot. Guess when overstock refurbishes they have to scratch out the ID no. Finally the technician concluded that there was likely a problem with the receiver so he would send me a new one even though he didn't sell me the keyboard or mouse.

My conclusion, from now on I will only consider refurbished electronics sold directly from the manufacturer. Feel they will be more accountable and know their equipment better.

I only buy 'open box; items at , let's say. Best Buy, and save at least 15-25% on the original cost. Never had a problem with any of the items I've purchased...

Mixed Opinions on refurbs.
A Sansa MP3 died after 90 days of very light use after much humming & Haing Sansa said tough...
Other things are ok. Look at the difference in price - the other thing especially with computers when you get it home run it solidly for at least 24 hours - download diagnostics & memory testing software ... They will usually "break" in that first very heavy trial period - and you should still be under warranty.
