How to Save on Meat Purchases

Submitted by: KarenWhite47  01/09/2009 8:37 PM

I buy meat, especially chicken, that has been marked down. When I get home, I break the meat,(chicken), into meal size portions. Then I vacuum seal the portions and freeze. It cuts down on leftovers in the fridge, and I always have enough frozen for several meals.

Great post Karen.

Another way to save money on meat is to invest in a slow-cooker. Because of the long, slow cook times of the cooker, tough cuts of meat become fall off the fork tender. This allows you to use tougher, cheaper cuts of meat in your meals saving you as much as 50% off of your meat costs.

Even better than the slow cooker is a pressure cooker. You can pressure cook the toughest cut of meat and it comes out fork cut tender.

I buy meat in bulk, I normally spend average 1.58 a pound, you can have it wrapped in meal size packages. I normally get 12-18 months worth of meat, depending on the weight of the side of beef.

Our meat market throws in chicken, pork and veggies for free when you buy one of the top packages. I normally can feed a family of 4 for under $2.00 per day, that is including breakfast, lunches and dinners.

Crystal, What market do you go to? I don't know of any markets in NJ that do that.

If someone knows of a South Jersey area market that does this please let me know.
