101 Ways to Bail Out Your Budget (Parenting.com)

Submitted by: kylie265  01/19/2009 2:50 PM

I love parenting magazine. I always pick up a little tidbit that makes my hectic life a bit more manageable. I enjoyed the article,'101 Ways to Bail Our Your Budget' about all the ways you can manage your families budget, how to cut down on expenses and how to make it work for you. Of course some of the tips weren't for me, and some were pretty obvious, but with 101 even if you take away 5 money saving tips, it is a worthwhile, and quick, read.

What I learned that I found was helpful was that (no. 46) you can set up a payment plan with your utility companies so that you aren't hit with big bills during high energy periods. Like right now. In the summer my monthly utility bills are about $60/month. In the winter they jump up to $180/month, so to be able to spread that payment out over the year makes it much easier on our budget.

And I remind my husband frequently of no. 33, leave your kids at home when you shop, it doesn't always work out, but does make my life a lot easier and it really is nice to not have to deal with the risk of tantrums.

I have also been a firm believer in no. 27. Open up the Bank of Mom. My oldest already has a bank account in her name which has been a great lesson in money management. To my delight, I've discovered I have a little saver in the family.

And no. 66, turn off you computer every time. I have been trying to convince my co-workers to do this, but they refuse. I at least turn off their monitors every night.

And I swear by no. 79. A friend and I alternate weekend nights which means our kids get to have a play date and I get to have a quiet night out with my husband, without the added expense of a $10/hour babysitter!
