Low Cost Alternatives to High Price Diet Foods

Submitted by: 21Barbara  01/23/2009 4:03 PM

It seems like all the healthy grocery options cost $$. There are always sales for highly processed foods, chips, snacks, sodas and less so for fresh produce, lean meats, organic milk, etc. And for some reason putting the word diet or low-fat on an item warrants a price hike. I have been reading about how it is goign to be harder for people to afford diets because the prices on healthy foods are so much greater than the junk food.

I read this online story 6 Affordable Ways to Jumpstart Your Diet so at least I know I'll be able to afford some healthy food during this recession. Author Jana Klauer, MD offers the following tips to stay healthy on a budget (click through to the link for corresponding recipes):

Salmon: substitute fresh salmon with canned salmon, same nutrition wise, but significantly cheaper

Meat: mix ground meats with veggies, bread crumbs, wheat germ, eggs, onions, carrots or beans to stretch your meat

Protein: eggs are a great & economical way to get extra protein

Legumes: all sorts of beans out there, great added to rice, chili, soups, you name it, super cheap and full of protein vitamins and low in calories, and filling!

(my friend makes this soup, the white bean and escarole, it is delicious and the perfect winter diet meal)

Soup: soup, fills you up, cheap, easy and good for you. (I bought a couple of dried soup mixes for $3.69 at a local gourmet grocery store that included the beans, noodles, and seasonings, I just needed to add onion, garlic and peppers. It made a hardy dinner for my family for less than $10!)

Vegetables: consider frozen alternatives, they are better for you than canned ones because there are less additives, salts and preservatives. just make sure to read the label! skip the heavy creamed frozen vegetables.

I heard something on the news this norning. Diets and diet plans are NOT necessary in order to lose weight. Instead, COUNT CALORIES. It matters not what you eat, it's all about the calories.

Get one of those little books at the supermarket checkout aisle with calorie values for foods, and start measuring and writing down everything you eat and drink.

If you are allowing yourself 1200 to 1400 calories a day (reasonable for most women) you will lose weight. You will also know that you can have chocolate cake. (but when you realize that it "costs" 400 calories, and that is your dinner, you will begin making better choices). It is nice to know that you "can if you really want to". You can even have a little bite or two of that cake, BUT be sure to count the 30 to 60 calories that it costs you!

Eating lots of green veggies fills you up. Bread does too, but it has lots more calories.
The way you prepare foods makes a difference too. Fried chicken is much higher in calories than skinless baked chicken.

Count calories, and be totally, brutally honest about amounts that you eat. You will lose those pounds.

Join Sparkpeople.com! It is a free website that gives tons of information on making better food choices, calorie counter (LOVE the calorie counter!) support groups, exercise videos etc... yep like Pnancarrow above said a person can eat whatever they want and if you stay in a calorie range for the day you will lose weight. That big peice of chocolate cake doesnt look that great anymore when it is concidered a dinner!

I also highly recommend SparkPeople.com . I lost 20 lbs by following their free program. I learned that you can eat a bowl of grapes while watching t.v. instead of just a small handful of potato chips. After a while, you start craving fruits and vegetables more, and the chips just taste greasy and unappealing. You can train your taste sense to eat better!

I tried Sparkpeople because they claimed to give you a personal diet plan. I am hypoglycemic and must be careful of high carbs but all of their daily menus were doubled and high carbs like two bowls stew and two slices bread and two apples and if I didn't like it I could spend 45 minutes on the large list they have and make my own menu, well,I can do that on my own by reading labels thank you. So pull out that pen and paper and do your own

Try this simple diet as suggested by Mark Bittman of the New York times. Be a Vegan Before 6pm or VB6.

That's it. I have been on it for 6 weeks now. If you can't commit, just commit to the next meal.
