Check Shoe Bottoms at Thrift Stores Before Buying

Submitted by: anonymous  01/23/2009 7:29 PM

I have always bought second-hand clothes, but shied away from shoes. Recently, all my "work" shoes seemed to wear out at the same time, and I did not want to spend the money to buy 3 or 4 pairs of new shoes. I have found several nearly-new pairs at the local Goodwill and Potter's House (Atlanta area mission stores).

My strategy is to check the bottoms to see how much the shoes have been worn. Even dress shoes usually have some sort of pattern or mark on the bottom. This wears over time just like tire tread. It's easy to tell how new the shoes are. At home, I give them a little clear polish and Armor-All around the bottoms, and then wear them to work and brag to my thrift-shopping friends about how cheap they were : )

If you find shoes with a sole showing a little wear & tear you can always build up the sole with shoe goo which is very inexpensive and can last for over a dozen shoes. Check Out:
