Old Cookbooks - a Great Source for Budget Meals

Submitted by: anonymous  01/23/2009 8:42 PM

A couple of weeks ago our library held a big book sale. I went on the last day of the sale to look for cookbooks.

I found many books from the 50s and 60s that showcased casseroles, make-ahead meals, easy buffets, regional cooking and so on.

For $3 I picked up a whole bagful. There are so many wonderful recipes that are easy and (best of all) cheap to make! These older books can be a real goldmine of ideas on how to stretch a buck.

I also love older cookbooks for cheap recipe ideas. I try to find Depression-era, WWII era or earlier recipes. They use more basic pantry ingredients and less packaged items and mixes. This allows me to control the additives in my food.

Check at the local public library. They will have old cookbooks that you can try for free.

Some times the library sells old books.

Also ask if your library is a federal depository library. Depository libraries keep all government publications no matter how old they may be. The 1930's and 1940's were a great time for budget recipe ideas. The government printed bulletins on all sorts of subjects. Gardening, sewing, budgeting, landscaping and home repairs are only a few of the subjects covered.

These items cannot leave the library so you will need to xerox what you want to take home.
