Housing is most people's biggest expense. Households with a subsidy pay 30% of their income for rent + utilities (including heat, a/c & water; not phone or cable).
Check out what is available in your state. Ours puts a booklet as does the Feds HUD. Here we have a hot real estate market & the city required that builders set aside at least 15 % of the units (when a building has 10 or more units) for local residents falling within income limits. That's often 60% of the median income. Developers screen applicants and can reject them.
Here, we've had 2 large companies building apartments, studios-3 bedrooms. They'll attract stores + restaurants. Public transit runs nearby (buses run every 20 minutes and cost $1.50 with transfers available. Without them we'd get massive gridlock. A 1-2 person household would qualify for a 1 bedroom unit. The government has several programs with different eligibility for each. Many subsidies come for the government others come from religious groups. |
