Are You Missing Out on Settlements You're Entitled To?

Submitted by: Tip Hero  01/24/2009 11:10 PM

This week we wrote about how consumers could get free cosmetics as part of a class action lawsuit settlement. Late last year, we also wrote about how consumers could get a year's worth of free credit report monitoring as part of a class action settlement against a credit reporting agency. In many of these settlements, the requirements for being part of the member class, or those qualified to participate in the settlement, are quite broad. In the case of the credit reporting settlement, it basically covered anyone who used a credit card since 1987.

It seems like we read about a new class action settlement every month that entitles consumers of the member class to compensation in the form of cash, products, or discounts. Out of curiosity, we did a search for "consumer settlement" on Google News and learned of a recent settlement that qualifies consumers who purchased Apple's first generation of Ipod Nanos that did not include a scratch resistant coating to receive a $15-$25 check from Apple. They include a website where you can enter in a serial number to see if your Nano qualifies. Ours did not.

In many class action settlements, you need to register as a member of the class by a certain date or you will not be eligble for the settlement (like the credit reporting settlement) or you need to claim your piece of the settlement on a certain date (like the cosmetics settlement). In either case, you need to be aware that you may be part of a member class. In some cases, the organizations offering a settlement will contact you by mail, and in others, they simply are required to publish a press release.

A while back we wrote a tip about using Google Alerts to find coupons and discounts. Setting up a Google Alert for "consumer settlement" would also be an excellent way to monitor news of impending settlements. There are tons of class action lawsuits each year, so you will have to sift through a lot of settlements that are not relevent, but there's also a high probability that you'll find 2-3 settlements for which you qualify.
