Is It Better to Sell Your Car or Trade It in at a Dealership?

Submitted by: Tip Hero  05/03/2008 12:00 AM

Selling your old car rather than trading it in at a dealership can net you more money. A private party sale can often net you 20-30% more than trading it in at the dealership. To get an idea of the difference go to KBB.com and compare the trade-in value vs. the private party value.

If you do trade it in at the dealership make sure to negotiate the value of the trade-in and the price of the car you are purchasing separate. Sales people often try to negotiate both together so they can give you something with one hand and take it away with the other. Also, some states only charge sales tax on the difference between the value of the trade-in and cost of the car you are purchasing.
