Save Money on Domain Name Purchases at GoDaddy

Submitted by: caleb  01/29/2009 10:57 AM

I use GoDaddy for domain name purchases. I've found that their pricing is very aggressive and typically beats the other big names like Register.com and NetworkSolutions.com. Below are a few tips I've picked up a long the way.

Find Promotional Rates.  If you do a Google search for "domain names", GoDaddy's ad typically appears at the top of the page and should say something like $6.99 or $7.99 per domain, I go through this link -- I'm not sure if you have to as you make get the "sale" price or whatever they're promoting if you just go to GoDaddy.com directly.

Use Coupon Codes.  I always look for coupon codes before buying anything online. So it's no different with domain name purchases and GoDaddy. I go to a coupon site like RetailMeNot.com and search for GoDaddy coupons. Not all of the codes listed on this site (or any other coupon code aggregator) will work as some of them aren't legit or only work once but I've found success with some of them. For example, I recently found a coupon that said I could save 15% on pruchases over $75 at GoDaddy (there was an expiration date). Keep in mind that GoDaddy won't combine offers, so if you've already got one special from GoDaddy, you can't add a second. (On one occasion, I found that the coupon code I entered made the price I already had go up, as I must have been given a better price (somehow) by GoDaddy without the coupon, so make sure you check the final price before you enter the code and then compare.)

Buy in Bulk.  Buy domain names in bulk. This is easier said than done. When I buy domain names, it's usually only one or a few at a time (I have an "ah-ha" moment and want to run out and grab some great name I came up with). But if you can, buy in bulk with them. You can discounts of $1 per domain name (i.e., $1 off each domain name) for something like 6-20 domain names purchased at once, and aroudn $1.50-$2.00 for buys of greater than 20 names.

Move to One Expiration Date.  When renewing your domain names, the same bulk discounts apply. In addition, consider moving all of your domain names to expire/auto-renew on the same day. This not only helps make things easier for you in terms of remembering when to check on the domains and renew them, but you might be able to get a one-time discount when you make this move (GoDaddy offered me an additional $25 off when I went to move all of the domains on to one expiration date). In order to do this, you do have to make a payment up front. So, for example, let's say it's January and you want to move all of the domains to one expiration date: December 31. Some names expire in March, some in June, some in September, and some in December. GoDaddy will let you pay pro-rated amounts so that you only pay for the difference between the current expiration date and December 31. Now, remember that you have to make the purchase up front, but you can save buy doing a bulk buy (will save you now and down the road when you renew them all again at once), and you might get a discount like I did of $25 (I was told you can sometimes get even more).

Consolidate.  If possible, and at least temporarily, make sure you have all of your domain names in the same account. GoDaddy will see this and will provide the bulk discounts, as well as possibly other discounts. If you're unable to do this (or too lazy to do it), make sure you tell them that you have multiple accounts and they might still be able to offer you discounts. And this leads me into the next tip...

Call GoDaddy.  I'd heard this tip before from a friend, but I was also told by a GoDaddy customer service rep over the phone to call them to get the best deals. I'm not sure why, but apparently they can/will offer you better pricing (at least some times) if you call them. Perhaps it's because they think they can upsell you? I'm not sure, but I suggest doing it. It has worked for me. And as an aside, their customer service reps have been easy to work with, so it's really not an issue for me to get on the phone with them.

Consider the Domain Discount Club.  I haven't actually used this tip, but it seemed like a good idea. It actually came from a customer service rep who I spoke to over the phone. He told me that if I have more than 20 or 30 domains to join their Domain Discount Club. I think it costs $89.99 per year. You get discounts that are even greater than the bulk discounts they offer. In order for this to make sense, I was told that you need to renew more than 20 or 30 names (I can't remember the actual number), as then the club will pay for itself -- and anything over that amount of domains will be true savings. Another tip the customer service rep passed along is to buy/renew domains using the Domain Discount Club, and to make your buys/renewals for more than one year (two, three, four, etc.). Then cancel the club after doing this (or only pay for one year of the club). This way, you'll get the club discounts applied to the purchases in year two (or two and three or however many years you go out) but will only have paid for the club once. Of course, you'll need to be certain that you want these domain names beyond just one year, but if you do, it's worth it.

I realize that these tips may sound like I'm getting some kind of kick-back for promoting GoDaddy. I'm not. I have no incentive to promote them. I'm guessing that these tips can be applied to other domain registrants, so definitely shop around and see if these same tips apply elsewhere. I only am using GoDaddy because I have experience working with them because I've found they have good pricing, but this can change and you may find better deals elsewhere.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
