Just goes to prove that there's absolutely nothing wrong with using "pre-owned" stuff! Although I was raised in a very financially-stable home, my parents are very thrifty; we grew up shopping in thrift stores and at garage sales for all kinds of things. My brother and I are now grown and thrifty ourselves; I'm so glad that we weren't raised to have any bias about used things. I'd much rather have a quality used item than a super-cheap brand-new item that's going to fall apart quickly.

Absolutley! I cant stand it when i see a new mom, and her family, going all out for clothes, toys, ect! As a mom of 3, who grew up in the blink of an eye, it sickens me to see the amount of money spent on little kids.
My brother buys his daughter, 6, something, almost everyday, on the way out to eat, or get fast food, needless to say, they have been living in my basement for 5 years! And i make half the money he does!
You can get wonderful clothes, and toys, at garage sales, I make gift baskets for baby showers with these items, and NOONE can tell the difference! Please garage sale! 4 your childrens sake!!!!!

I love shopping at thrift stores.I go several times a week, sometimes I just look but don't find anything "I can't live without".I am amazed how many times you find clothing with price tags still on them.If I took everything out of my home that wasn't pre-owned, then there wouldn't be much in it.Believe me!!!!!! My grand kids will say "Can we go to the Goodwill?" LOL.

I too agree that gently used stuff is great, and I never owned any new nursery furniture.
A caveat:
Used cribs need to have narrow spaces between slats. You should not be able to pass a soda can through them. The mattress should fit snugly all around, as babies can suffocate if they slide into these spaces. Lastly, there should be no corner posts, finials or other things kids can hook clothes on. Saw off anything you are unsure of. Deaths from these accidents are very rare, but still unnecessary.

I am often shocked at what people pay for little ones. Many of my friends have spent thousands to set up their nurseries. They all work and wonder how I can be a stay at home mom. Our crib was a find at a used store...my parents bought it for my sister. She used it for her three boys, then gave it to me. It looks fine, and is safe. The changing table I used for my son...free from my sister. The dresser $50 at a garage sale, and the toddler bed $25 at the same sale, the mattresses for both a friends garage sale ($5 for both), they had only been used a few months. Even the matching bedding for the beds was under $10...the room looks nice (before kids I was a designer). My husbands grandmother used to say there was nothing you couldn't fix with a coat of paint...there might be something to say for that.;)

Although we were on an extremely tight budget when I was pregnant with my first child, we would not consider a used mattress for the crib. We gladly accepted hand me downs in the way of clothing and other items, but I'd never take a chance on a used mattress for sanitary reasons. Brand new mattresses are not expensive especially if you get them from Walmart or somewhere like that.
