I know it's cliche, but nothing beats a sunset picnic. I live near the beach, so I am lucky, it is the best setting to relax, avoid distractions and enjoy great company in a gorgeous place.
Happy Valentine's day!

We always go to a matinee movie. And never, never buy food at the theater.

I love the movie Elf-I watch it every Christmas Eve with the fam- so my boyfriend took a cue from Will Farrel's 'Buddy' and took me on an Elf date - a walking tour of the city we live in, but that we are too busy to slow down and enjoy and would normally just walk by.

He planned it all out, he took me to a coffee shop for the 'best coffee in town,' took me to the park to watch the street performers, and then skating on the mall pond. We walked through the outdoor sculpture garden and called it a date.

It couldn't have cost us more than $15 but was one of my favorite dates.

I google restaurant.com coupon codes, and buy one of those, so you can get a $25 off $35 purchase for as low as $2. We go to matinee movies, and get dinner after. I also signed up to be a frequent movie goer at my theater, so I get points everytime we buy a ticket which goes towards free concession stand items. I also signed up for their newsletter and they send me coupons so we get a large soda and a large popcorn for $3.75!

I realize this is not for everyone but my husband and I still consider time together to be the best date, gift or celebration.

My husband and I go to a park on the Mississippi river and take a book each to read. (If we need a book, we stop first at the library or the Goodwill bookstore to re-donate the books we've read and buy a "new" one.)This park has rocking chairs overlooking the river which we sit in while we read. Then, we take a walk along the river or through the nature trail. Occassionally, we take a lunch from home with us and/or stop on the way home for an ice cream. This is one of our favorite dates since it gives us time together to talk, unwind, enjoy nature, and get in a little exercise both mentally and physically.

My husband and I are pretty active, so we try to make our dates active too, from hiking to cross country skiing to going for a bike ride. We'll stop midway to chat and have a snack. Great to get out and moving and spend quality time together.

We always celebrate Valentine's Day by attending the annual Valentine's show at our favorite folk club. Performers sign up for five-minute slots and they can do any song as long as it's about love. Admission is $7 per person, but we get in free by using the credits we have earned for volunteering at other shows throughout the year. So all we spend is a couple of bucks for refreshments. The show falls on the Friday nearest to Valentine's Day, not on the day itself--but that's close enough for us.
