Clean Baseboards for Heat Savings

Submitted by: anonymous  02/13/2009 6:59 PM

While cleaning one day i put the soft brush attachment of the vacum cleaner under the baseboard and was amazed at the amount of dust and dog hair etc. that appeared after running it along the length of the baseboard. My assumption is that the metal fins radiate heat more effectively when they are not covered with dirt. This was dirt that I couldn't see from looking into the baseboard.

You are absolutely correct about keeping them vacuumed over and under for our hot water baseboard heat. If you have to have furniture in front of the baseboards, leave adequate space for the heat to rise, rather than heat the back of the couch or bookshelf.
