Thrifty Holiday Activities

Buy a year pass to a zoo or museum that offers free trick or treating (boo at the zoo) free easter egg hunts, free or reduced light displays, fireworks etc. You get the benefit of the pass, part of it is tax deductable and you have a place to take your kids to trick or treat, see holiday lights and hunt for easter candy free. This elliminates the worry of "what to do" for your kids on holidays. being a member automatically entitles you to holiday events free if your zoo/museum offers it.

Often these places offer magic shows, arts and crafts etc for kids/adults to. Some passes like my zoo pass lets me take my family of 4 plus two guests. SO if you have company in town you can meet them at the zoo/museum and get them in free for events or just to visit and walk around. and you get discounts at the restuarants, food booths and gift shops and booths. at our zoo we even get discounts on the train, ferris wheel, merry go round. Buying a year pass to a zoo or museum not only keeps you and your family busy during the year and holidays but helps your communnity, perserves art, history and helps animals as well as creates job and stimulates some economic growth. It's a great way to give back and give to yourself. I started doing this two years ago and I just wish I would of done it earlier.

My sister had a great idea for my family...she is getting us a state park pass. Not a bad price when you find that 4 people will use it. My husband and I love to hike, but with two little ones under 3 we haven't had a lot of chances lately. There is a state park we just love within 5 miles of us. Even if the kids aren't ready to hike this year they will love picnics, splashing in the water, and exploring. It also starts us on the path to teach them to be active (less health costs in their future), and to be more involved with nature.
