For more than 30 years, Billy Packer was a college basketball analyst and commentator. He was also the lead analyst for 34 Final Fours, first at NBC  in 1975 followed by CBS in 1980. He also worked as an analyst for ACC games on Raycom. He retired in 2008.

Now, Packer’s sons, Mark Packer and Brandt Packer, have announced the sad news that their father has died. The cause of death was kidney failure. Packer was 82 years old.

According to Mark, his father was hospitalized in Charlotte for three weeks prior to his death. He suffered from several medical issues.

On Twitter, Mark Packer wrote, “The Packer Family would like to share some sad news. Our amazing father, Billy, has passed. We take peace knowing that he’s in heaven with Barb. RIP, Billy.”

Brandt also shared a tribute to his father on social media. Alongside pictures of his father with his family, Brandt wrote, “Rest in Peace to the most incredible Dad, mentor and best friend.” Then, he explained the profound influence his father had on his life. He wrote, “My entire life I always tried to emulate him – how to be a husband, father, to prep for a telecast, you name it, he was the bar for me.” Brandt explained that he feels “crushed” at his father’s passing but he is happy to know that his dad is able to rest in peace with Barb Packer, Billy Packer’s wife who proceeded him in death.

CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus also released a statement regarding Packer’s death. The statement explains, “Billy Packer was synonymous with college basketball for more than three decades and set the standard of excellence as the voice of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.” The statement continued, “He leaves part of his legacy at CBS Sports, across college basketball and, most importantly, as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.”

Before his career as a basketball announcer, Packer played college basketball at Wake Forest. His two sons have followed in his footsteps and both work in sports broadcasting.
